NATIONALS 2009 - HASTINGS
The weather was wet and cold in Hastings but the Spitifires made
up for that by playing well, reaching the final where they lost
out to Boston Bruins.
The highlight of the weekend and probably the best game of the
tounament was a semi final clash between the Spitfires and London
Street Warriors which the Spitfires eventually won 3-2 with a goal
by Charlie Ascott half way through the second period of extra time.
Bailey Chittock & Oli Baldock topped the tournament points
scoring list and Bailey made the dream team.
JUNIOR
NATIONALS 2009 - BISLEY
The Stansted Jets team travelled to Bisley for the Junior
National Championships 2009, finishing a creditable 3rd in the LESHA
league, they were drawn a tough group of potential finalists, Oxford
and the Wasps, in the qualify rounds. A win against either would
mean at least a top 8 position in the country.
It was an early start Saturday morning, first game of the day,
to set the standard for all the teams over an exciting weekend.
The oxford team always come well prepared, their Goalie, Hedges,
pulling off some outstanding saves against shots from Ross &
Sam, in the early onslaughts. Our offensive strategies were proving
productive, until an unexpected turnover during a change, led to
a goal for Oxford. Again battle was resumed and shots from Nathan
were turned aside, only to see a wayward shot creep passed Dave
in goal at our end. An unlucky bounce off the roof of the net led
to Oxfords 3rd, and the game was sealed, the Jets endeavours to
recover the lost goals left our defence exposed, Aaron playing hard
to stem the rush, but the game ended 8-0 in Oxfords favour.
The squad regrouped for the second encounter of the day against
the Wasps, a tough northern team, who took no prisoners. They were
met check for check, as Jenny & Ralph attempted to asserted
there dominance in our defensive zone. Shots from Andy, shooting
under intense pressure and massive slap shots from Jake were stopped
by an exceptional Goalie in the wasps net. Although Zoe pulled off
some incredible saves in the second period the score ran out at
a 10-1 loss
With the two qualifying games lost, the squads objectives were revised,
the target was now to finish 9th, top of the third place teams.
Sunday morning saw us matched in a local derby against the Checkers,
this was a no holds barred encounter, with the Checkers living up
to their name and dishing out some physical treatment, but the team
stood firm and responded with goals from Ross and Sam to open us
a commanding lead. Unfortunately a goal mouth incident, in our own
end, led to a major injury to Jake, who was taken off to hospital
for checkups. Josh stepping up to take his place on the line, ripped
in some powerful wrist shots, to add pressure to our attacks. The
final result was 6-0, and we had won our first game and got a taste
for winning!
The last team to stand in our path were the Hustlers.
Pumped from watching some incredible hockey, the Jets came out at
full throttle, no team could have withstood the incredible onslaught,
with 3 quick goals from Ross & Sam the game was quickly beyond
the Hustlers grasp. Coach Adam now had the opportunity to fully
utilize the personnel on his bench and the lines were rolled in
quick succession to maintain the impetuous and to keep Gary on his
toes, working the gate!. Toby making some strong tackles and setting
up attacks. Lee worked hard during his shifts and was rewarded by
steering the ball through the keepers legs to score. By now Ross
was in flamboyant mood, twisting and turning with the ball, he pivoted
backwards at incredible speed into his own end, only to discover
our goal in his path, wow where did that come from! It was the biggest
check of the day and although he bounced to his skates, that had
to have hurt!
Dave in his last appearance in a Jets shirt was determined to
keep a clean sheet and was rewarded for his performance by not conceding.
It ended up a rampant 6-1victory.
With 2 games won on the second day, our revised mission was accomplished,
all the hard work and commitment by the players and coach, over
the season had been rewarded, we had finished the top 3rd placed
team in the country, 9th.
This was the National Championships, only the most skilful and
committed teams are successfully, just maybe this performance can
inspire our teams and players, in the future, to achieve greater
success, good luck to Sam and the Spitfires in a couple of weeks
time.
Well done Warlords, a masterful performance.

TRIBUTE
TO NICK GIBBON
Nicks accident
came as devastating news to us here at Stansted Hockey Club. We
are a small close knit team and Nick had been part of our lives
for the past eight years or so.
To our fledgling club, just starting out, he was a fresh new recruit
who quickly asserted himself an a essential part of the team. As
he grew in confidence and maturity through the years, he was identified
as a team member that could shine above the average player, he was
a natural leader and captain. We were also proud that he was consistently
selected to represent the club and the Southeast at regional level.
Nick started out as a boy and we saw him grow to
a man, he was part of our hockey family, not only to us here at
Stansted, but to the hockey world at large, his team mates across
the country have expressed there grief and sadness. Nick could always
be relied on to give his best for his team, and lead by example,
simply getting down to work and never complaining, when things got
tough. As a mark of respect and remembrance, we observed a minutes
silence before the Giants game on Sunday. We were honoured to be
his team mate and friend, we here at Stansted will never forget
him.

11.9.2008 LESHA Peewees Win Regionals - Report
1.9.2008 More Stansted Regional Players - update from last week!
No less than 7 of our Peewee players have been selected to represent our region this year; Bailey Chittock, Lawrence Raffell, Aaron Jenkins, Jordan Enever, David Partington, Oliver Baldock, and Billy Mathews. 7 in a team of 15 players representing 6 clubs in our league is an achievement both our club and our coaches can be proud of...well done to every one and good luck to the whole team at the Regionals next week.
31.8.2008 Giants Have Historic Victory Over Warriors.....oops, no they don't!
The Giants played one of their finest games ever against league leaders, the Warriors, dominating the play in the second and third period and frustrating the Warriors whenever they tried to break forward. After goals by Ben O, Ben C and Ricky, the Giants were 3 - 2 up at the 2 minute bell and a historic win seemed to be on the cards......but alas it was not to be, the Warriors came back, scoring two goals in the final minutes, the 2nd with 1 second to go. Credit to the Warriors for some clever tactical play in the final 2 minutes but even more credit to the Giants for their tactics, commitment and level of play throughout the game. Hopefully they will get a chance to play the Warriors again soon and show them that last sunday was not a one off! Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Ross, who played out of his skin, but finally took a hit too many ...!!

23/24.8.2008 JSM Senior Tournament
Despite only losing two games at the JSM Tournament (to Crusaders and Rockets, by one goal) the Giants ended up coming 7th, a position which really did not reflect their outstanding performance against strong opposition. But the JSM is more than just a tournament and as much fun was had off the pitch as on, with the camping and BBQ again being a highlight of the weekend. Ricky was top goal scorer and was awarded the 'Giant Hat' and newcomers to the squad, Simon Kemp and Chris Goddard were both great assets to the team. Photos
